Economics and politics often make uneasy bedfellows and so it was in August as the threatened US-led intervention in Syria depressed stock markets at the end of the month.

In the UK, David Cameron suffered defeat in the Commons, appearing to totally mis-judge the strength of backbench opposition. If there’s one thing the financial markets don’t like it’s uncertainty and in the last week of August the Prime Minister delivered precisely that.

Political rumblings about the Equitable Life scandal

A report by the Commons Public Accounts Committee (PAC), says that up to 236,000 pension savers with Equitable Life, which collapsed in 2000, or one in five policyholders, might not be traced before what it calls an “arbitrary” deadline of March 2014 for the Government compensation scheme.

Tax evasion is a crime – the CPS view

According to a spokesperson for the CPS, the Crown Prosecution Service, most of us pay our taxes and pay on time. Figures from HMRC suggest that in 2011-2012, 93% of tax due was paid.

However, the CPS recognises that there are people who dishonestly and fraudulently evade tax. They choose to hide their income and wealth to evade tax, claim tax relief to which they are not entitled and subvert the tax and excise systems to make money for themselves.
