Report reveals vast disparity between the sexes retirement finances

Recent research from MGM Advantage, the retirement income specialist, reveals alarming disparities between the retirement finances of men and women. Although, on average, people in retirement feel that they need an additional £130 per week on top of their current income to be financially comfortable, women’s financial position in retirement is already more austere than that of men and their outlook seems to be much more prudent.

Suppose you want to find the smartest student in a classroom, you would look for the one from whom others copy their homework.

New research by a team including Raghu Rau, Sir Evelyn de Rothschild Professor of Finance at Judge Business School, draws on this to argue that in the fund management world, even fund managers who try to copycat – those with the most incentive to find their smartest peers – don't have the capability to identify superior fund managers in advance.

In all the time we’ve been writing these market commentaries it’s difficult to remember a more turbulent month than October 2014.

Throughout the summer we have been writing about events in the Ukraine and the worries that conflict posed for Europe. Fortunately we now have a ceasefire in the region – and Russia and the Ukraine have just concluded a deal (brokered by the EU) for supplies of gas to resume. Just as well, last week the temperature in Kiev dropped to five degrees and 60% of Government buildings were without any heat.
