The Art of Doing Nothing

Category: home & Life Planning

What did you do at the weekend? Or what are you planning to do next weekend? At this time of year it seems, there is no shortage of options. Whether you’re having a barbecue, going to an outdoor theatre event, enjoying a little mini break somewhere or taking the family to a theme park, there is always so much to do. If you stay at home, you might consider some DIY projects or improving the garden.  Very rarely, do we feel comfortable when asked this question to simply say that we have no particular plans and that we’re doing nothing.

We all know on some level that the push to be doing ‘something’ is partly commercially driven. Where would the leisure and DIY industry be if we spent all our free time simply relaxing and doing nothing in particular?

And yet, it can be remarkably good for us to do just that from time to time. It is almost certainly good for our finances too.

When was the last time that you had some free days that you didn’t actually plan and allocate activities to? We always have so many things to do, but resting and just doing nothing in particular can open up a whole new range of opportunities. If a friend wants to pop by for a coffee, the answer is suddenly yes.  Or, if the weather is lovely you could just sit out in the garden and watch the world go by for a little while. You might actually find time to sit and read one of those books we all have in our houses that we have been ‘meaning’ to read.

There is something truly wonderful about having free time and space, and not having any obligations or things that you ‘must’ do. So every so often, plan a day in your life where you have no commitments and nothing you have to do. Not only will you bring back more time and headspace into your life, you’ll probably save money too – just as long as doing nothing includes avoiding online shopping!
