There’s no doubt that alarming as the introduction is to Choose Yourself by James Altucher, there is truth in what he writes.
“The world is changing. Markets have crashed. Jobs have disappeared. Industries have been disrupted and are being remade before our eyes….. everything we thought was safe no longer is.”
His conclusion, however, is more positive and very resonant for anyone who has children or who is considering stepping out of the world of salaries and employment to start up their own business.
As Altucher puts it: “New tools and economic forces have emerged to make it possible for individuals to create art, make millions of dollars and change the world without ‘help.’ More and more opportunities are rising out of the ashes of the broken system to generate real inward success (personal happiness and health) and outward success (fulfilling work and wealth).
In his book Altucher offers plenty of practical advice and inspiration on how to create a personal path to happiness in this brave new world, but one of the most cited extracts is his concept of The Daily Practice. Put simply, this is a routine of things that you do every day to maintain or improve the major aspects of your life. It could be going for a walk, writing out ten ideas, reading for an hour — all Altucher suggests is that your daily practice encompasses the physical, the emotional, the mental, and the spiritual.
